 Easiest way to sand and prep door moldings for painting? We live in an old house that has painted door moldings. There are chips and nicks everywhere and I want to fill, smooth and paint them. - What should I fill them with? I don't want to spend an eternity on this project, so the easiest way would be most helpful. Thanks! I'm not a painter but I am a cabinet maker and finisher. There is a product available that is for patching dry wall. I have used it to fill nail holes when building cabinets. Its available at most home centers. I'm sorry I don't know the name of it , but it has an almost "fluffy" feeling to it before it drys. Its very light weight and sands easily.And that is what you want, because, your house is old and may have lead based paint on the moldings. Because this product sands so easily it doesn't take much to smooth it out, ie, very little sanding = very little dust. And you dont want dust if you have lead based paint. lol, ask for the fluffy lightweight patching compound , at the home center and they will probably know what you mean. Heres a tip. Try to find someone late 20s to mid 30s to help you at the home center, the younger ones dont know enuff and the older ones have forgtten most of what they once knew. Trust me Im not being mean , but I spend alot of time and a lot of mony at Menards and Home Depot. And one more thing , use a dust mask . |
